40 / 40 PROJECT

This exhibition of small works represents a celebration of critical ideas and narratives. Each artist communicates their unique language of expression upon a 40 x 40cm canvas. This year gallery artists are joined by five guest artists: Claus Stangl (Winner – 2022 Archibald Packing Room Prize), Annalisa Ferraris, Carmel Byrne, David Collins (courtesy Defiance Gallery) and Bernard Greaves.
An exhibition of small paintings by a range of talented artists encourages the viewer to engage directly with new concepts and, through a process of comparison, recognise and appreciate the unique language and expression inherent to each. Furthermore, this curated exhibition of small works demonstrates how an artist’s communicative power is not dependant on large scale or size. Each small but strongly evocative work of art utilises space effectively, conveying the vital aspects of form and idea. This exhibition of little gems offers a contrast to heroic large-scale paintings, often classified as ‘masterpieces’ or ‘major works’. By setting aside expectations of physical scale, the 40/40 Project invites evaluation of each work based on values of aesthetics, form and idea.
