A selected finalist in the 2016 Portia Geach Memorial Award for her portrait of David Batty. This is the 8th time Kerry’s work has been exhibited in this prestigious award, which is recognised as one of the most important celebrations of the talents and creativity of Australian female portrait painters in the nation. David’s love for the bush and remote Australia has provided an array of great characters and a rich palette to ply his storytelling skills. With seven TV series, five one hour and over two hundred short form docs, David’s films entertain and provide an insight into outback worlds.
His filmmaking career began in 1982 in Alice Springs where he established the TV production unit, Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association. He is well known for his hit television series, “Bush Mechanics”. Screening now on ABC IView is his Web Series, “Black As”, tracking four young men and their wild adventures across Arnhem Land.
I met David on the South Coast, not far from Bermagui. I was impressed with his deep respect for the Aboriginal people and his creative commitment to his film projects. I have included a film still image from “Black As” for the backdrop of David’s portrait.
