Congratulations to Bec Juniper, who has been announced Winner of the 2018 King’s Art Prize. The prize is an $20,000 acquisitive award, presented to the artist judged with the best contemporary artwork. Esteemed guest judge, Barry Pearce, had the following words to say about Juniper’s winning work, ‘Covered scalded ground’: “I feel her painting demonstrates a poetic inflection that is very much hers. I like its seamless coalescence of the macro and micro. By which I mean it reads beautifully from a distance, with restrained colour and eloquent shapes articulated across the flat surface, a landscape seen from above at great height. Then, as we slowly stalk it closer, a delicate intimacy begins to take over and embrace us through her unique voice.” (Mr Barry Pearce, Emeritus Curator of Australian Art at the Art Gallery of NSW).
