Featuring two new series by Emma Hack: ‘Geometric’ and ‘Flight of Fancy’ (painted installations).Emma Hack is known for her photographs of painted human bodies that merge with patterned backgrounds, producing a chameleon-like camouflage effect. This unique approach achieved international exposure in the music video Somebody that I used to know, by Gotye (attracting 957 million YouTube views). Hack’s work is frequently exhibited overseas, most recently at the prestigious Asia Contemporary Art Show, Hong Kong (2018).  In May she returns to Australia for the leading photo festival, Head On Photo Festival, with two stunning series.Flight of Fancy features the artist’s muse surrounded by floating flowers, suspended in  voluminous colour and layers of distortion. Her models cradle live birds within fantastical settings which are set-builds rather than painted backgrounds, featuring flowers and natural plant life.  The artist’s second series, Geometric, creates spatial difference between model and background, capturing poses that contort and evolve the human form and its surrounding space. The structured geometric backgrounds, juxtaposed against the flowing curves of folded torsos, arms and legs, create a structural interest to the eye, while the model or subject still appears ‘at one’ with its surrounds. “Although my work is perceived initially as photographic: I prefer it to be viewed as a painterly  installation that is then captured photographically.
