MICHAEL GROMM:
Sun Graffiti and Ghosts | Thrilling Sydney Debut Exhibition
31/08/2024 - 18/09/2024
Michael Gromm’s practice playfully explores life’s paradoxes – the tangible and the intangible, the perceived and the imagined. Through his use of sweeping gestural marks, meticulously rendered forms, fluid paint pours and tightly controlled patterns, Gromm’s work reflects the parameters and principles of our world as attested through its visual elements. Gromm’s work is steeped in organised systems, complexities, ambiguities and absurdities when brushed up against each other. There is a little bit of everything.
Gloriously playful, Gromm’s superlative compositions explode with luxuriant details and charisma. Unapologetically diametrical in his approach, the artist explains,
“My work is process-driven, combining multiple techniques and visual ideals. Sometimes working backwards, as well as forwards – hiding truths and revealing lies”.
My paintings are neither purely abstract nor figurative; instead I prefer they sit at the cusp, simultaneously becoming and disintegrating. I intentionally embrace an intuitive process-led practice in which forms are allowed to spontaneously erupt through fluid pours, some to be embellished and built upon, while many others are sacrificed under successive layers of paint. I progressively grow and destroy until I feel the work is nearing completion – at which point I choose to leave a series of subtle inferences to what may or may not be, rather than to offer any concrete answers.”
